Where to Ski (and Apres Ski) at Deer Valley
A truck rolls up on the side of the parking lot, pulling a trailer with seats for guests at Deer Valley Resort. Save your legs for skiing, and jump on for the short ride to the base of Snow Park Lodge. This is just the beginning of the customer service that you will come across at Deer Valley. Staff members are there to help you unload your skis and point you in the right direction to lockers, lift tickets, and lounges. Where else will you find bathroom stalls made from granite? How about water that is heated to the perfect temperature for hand washing? This level of service and amenities is very welcoming and comfortable, making it effortless to get on to the slopes.
Deer Valley -- Top of Bald Mountain
Heading up the Carpenter Express lift will give you multiple options for warm up runs. Ski straight off the lift to get to the Silver Lake Lodge and Sterling Express lifts. Ski left off the chair and access greens, blues and black diamond runs, including Champion (site of the 2002 Olympic mogul event) and Know You Don’t (site of the 2002 Olympic slalom event). Success is the easier route down, and provides a glimpse of the slopeside chateaus that encompass most of the resort.
Deer Valley Mountain Host
It is hard to miss a “Mountain Host” at the top of all the lifts at Deer Valley, and it is their sole job to make sure you know where you are going and to offer any suggestions to make your run more enjoyable. Next to the trail maps at the top of the lift, you will also find a list of the most recently groomed runs, making navigating the easiest route down painless.
Deer Valley -- Keno Run
The Silver Lake Express lift takes you to the second base at Deer Valley. Here you will find the Silver Lake Lodge, Stein Erickson Lodge and several lifts accessing different parts of the mountain. Proceed to the Sterling Express lift for the easiest access to Bald Mountain. Ski east on McHenry to the Wasatch Express lift. The runs under this lift usually have some bumps, and you can find powder in the trees. To reach the runs on Flagstaff Mountain, head to the right, down Trainer, which will take you to the Quincy Express chair.
If you are looking for intermediate groomers, Flagstaff Mountain is a gold mine. Lost Boulder and Lucky Star are local favorites. On a powder day, hit the Empire Express lift for first tracks on Solace and Conviction. The Lady Morgan Express chair is also a favorite for fresh snow and its expert terrain.
After enjoying a bowl of turkey chili at the Empire Lodge, make your way back to the east side of the mountain. The Mayflower Express and Sultan Express lifts service the far side of Bald Mountain. Here you will find long, advanced runs and short lift lines along with incredible views of Jordanelle Reservoir. Find stashes of powder in the trees along these runs for days after the storm.
If your legs still have some strength left at the end of the day, check out Big Stick on your way back to base. This run is usually not as crowded as the others that lead home during rush hour. Don’t forget to stop by one of the lodges for a drink by the huge, cozy fireplaces. Stein Erickson’s Lodge is quite an experience in après ski elegance. The all you can eat Seafood Buffett at Snow Park Lodge is an amazing way to replenish all those calories burned during a great day of skiing.
